Inlays & Onlays
When a tooth has damage that’s too extensive for a filling but not severe enough for a crown, inlays and onlays offer a durable, long-lasting solution that preserves more of your natural tooth structure.
What Are Inlays and Onlays?
Both inlays and onlays can be made from porcelain, gold, or composite resin. Porcelain is especially popular for its natural look and strength, blending seamlessly with your smile.
Inlays
Onlays
Fit inside the cusps (tips) of your tooth, similar to a filling but custom-made for a perfect fit.
Extend over one or more cusps, covering a larger portion of the tooth for added strength and protection.
Benefits of Inlays & Onlays
- Corrects yellow, brown, and spotted stains
- Preserve more natural tooth structure than crowns
- Highly durable—last 10 to 30 years with proper care
- Natural appearance with tooth-colored porcelain or composite
- A conservative alternative to full crowns
The Inlay/Onlay Process

Visit 1 – Preparation
- We remove any old fillings, decay, or damaged tooth material.
- An impression of your tooth is taken for a precise custom fit.
- A temporary seal is placed to protect your tooth.

Visit 2 (and sometimes Visit 3) – Placement
- The temporary seal is removed.
- The inlay or onlay is checked for fit and bite alignment.
- It’s bonded securely with high-strength resin and polished for a smooth, natural finish.
Why Choose an Inlay or Onlay Over a Filling?
Traditional fillings can weaken a tooth by up to 50%, while inlays and onlays actually strengthen it—making them an ideal choice for restoring function, beauty, and longevity.
